Chic, quilted comfort-Chicago Tribune

Posted : Friday 1 April 2011

In interior design circles, upholstered headboards and beds have been around the block, and back again. Today you can find everything from classic styles with modern overtones to over-the-top, Moorish-influenced shapes that loom dramatically above the pillows. Up next? Quilting moves from the covers to the headboard, making those cushy beds even more cozy and textural. Ligne Roset's Ruche bed (just introduced at the Maison et Objet furniture show in Paris and arriving in stores in late summer; prices start at $3,945) combines a sleeker, lighter silhouette with puffy upholstery that wraps the wood headboard and frame.

Bare legs float the bed above the floor, and a slice of headboard remains visible, suggesting a quilt that's simply folded over the bed. Which gave us this idea: If your slick aesthetic could use a little warming up, and you're the owner of a bed with a simple panel headboard, try this: Find a colorful modern quilt (our pick, the simple, reversible Karit bedspread by Ikea) and fold it neatly over the headboard, tucking it snugly behind the mattress. If you're not going to be buying the dreamy Ligne Roset version just yet, it's an easy, temporary DIY that could give you a touch of the quilted look to cozy up your bed.
